Turkish police firing tear gas and water cannon at soccer fans -- arriving for the opening match at Istanbul's brand new stadium. They'd come to see the city's Besiktas play rival team Bursapor. and while some fans had reportedly been pushing through turnstiles to get into the stadium, the police response took many by surprise. Turkey has been on edge and has tightened security in public spaces like this, after a series of bombings in its major cities which the government blames on Islamic State and Kurdish separatist militants. Fans of Besiktas are fiercely hostile to Turkish President Tayyip Erdowan and played a prominent role in anti-government streets protests three years ago. It didn't help that none of the fans were invited to the official opening of the stadium by Erdogan, the day before. It was hoped that the new $100 million stadium would build closer ties between Besiktas supporters and the government. The response on opening game day was not what officials had in mind.
