ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: One day after setting a new Tony record for the most nominations, the creator of "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda, called the achievement extraordinary and unbelievable. "This has been one of the best seasons for new musicals for as long as I can remember. So it's been amazing," said Miranda of the show's 16 nominations. "Hamilton" features a multiracial cast in a hip-hop and R&B-inflected musical that tells the story of U.S. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, who was killed in an 1804 duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong'o was nominated for her role in the play "Eclipsed," which features an all-female cast and creative team. "We get along so well, we also expect and challenge each other to bring our A-game all the time," she said. The field of diverse nominees shows how the landscape of Broadway is changing. "We're in a moment where we are happy and open to having people that just tell a good story regardless of what they look like or where they come from. If they're good at it, they're good at it and that's that. And I think that's really how it should be anyway," said Cynthia Erivo, nominee for best performance by an actress in a leading role in musical for "The Color Purple." Trophies will be handed out in New York City on Sunday, June 12th.
