Ex-Argentine dictator jailed in conspiracy trial

Fifteen ex-military officials, including a former Argentine dictator, are found guilty of a conspiracy to kidnap and kill dissidents more than 30 years ago. Yiming Woo reports.

Former Argentine dictator Reynaldo Bignone has been sentenced to 20 years in jail. He and 14 other former military officials are found guilty of conspiring to kidnap and kill opponents in the 1970s and 80s. The secret programme was called Operation Condor, was coordinated by dictatorships in six South American countries. Human rights lawyer Luz Palmas Zaldua: (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LAWYER FOR CELS (CENTRE FOR LEGAL AND SOCIAL STUDIES), LUZ PALMAS ZALDUA, SAYING: "This ruling determines not only that state terrorism in Argentina was a criminal conspiracy, but also its repressive coordination with other dictatorships. They worked together illegally to maximise efforts to persecute the political opposition from each of the dictatorships, and to eliminate those who were considered to be subversive groups." More than 100 people disappeared between 1976 and 1983.
