Facebook Wednesday revealing a rare glimpse into how its News Feed displays content but stopping far short of sharing its secret sauce. CEO Mark Zuckerberg was left in damage-control mode last month after a news report alleging liberal political bias in its Trending Topics feature. The social media giant denied the report and responded by sharing how Trending Topics works.. after Republicans on Capitol Hill demanded answers. Reuters Tech Editor Jonathan Weber. SOUNDBITE: JONATHAN WEBER, TECH EDITOR, REUTERS, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "That incident has prompted them to recognize they need to be more communicative about some of these things. There's a huge trust aspect to Facebook. You feel that what they're doing is on the up and up, and you're not being manipulative, and they very much want to maintain that sense of the brand." So how does News Feed work? The social media giant saying posts from family and friends rank first, followed by informative content like news and recipes... with entertaining content ranking third. Facebook also finds itself fending off criticism that it's a virtual echo chamber -- an exec telling Reuters the News Feed team tries to help users find new pages to follow to diversify what they see.
