Rodrigo Duterte's sworn in as the Philippines' 16th president. It was a departure from the traditional ceremony usually held at a Manila grandstand and witnessed by hundreds of thousands. Duterte said he wanted the event at the presidential palace to be a simple one. But his inaugural speech set out again his campaign promise to wipe out crime. (SOUNDBITE)(English) RODRIGO DUTERTE, PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT, SAYING: "I have seen how criminality, by means all foul, snatched from the innocent and the unsuspecting the years and years of accumulated savings, ears of toil, and suddenly they are back to where they started. Look at this from that perspective and tell me that I am wrong." Outside the palace hundreds of left-wing activists rallied to show their support for Duterte's presidency. Duterte's been criticised for his support of extra-judicial killings. Human rights groups say death squads in the city of Davao where he was mayor for 22 years killed at least 1, 400 people although Duterte denies involvement in vigilante bloodshed. His rise to the role of president was fuelled by his single-issue campaign pledge to end crime in just six months.
