BUSES DRIVE THROUGH STREETS WITH FANS WAVING STORY: Thousands of fans crowded the streets of Lisbon on Monday (July 11) to welcome back the triumphant Euro 2016 winners Portugal to the city. Portugal beat hosts France 1-0 in Sunday's (July 10) final to win a major championship for the first time. There were excited celebrations in Lisbon as people remembered the 2004 tournament. Twelve years ago Portugal were hosts, and played in the final - but lost to outsiders Greece 1-0. The team arrived back from Paris early in the morning, and they waved the European Championship trophy to fans from the aircraft steps. Then the players boarded an open-topped bus to process to the Belem Palace where President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa gave them an official reception, and presented each player with an award for distinguished acts of public service. After a group photograph with the president, the team continued their bus tour of the city streets, arriving at the Futebol Park fan-zone in the city's enormous square at Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques surrounded by a sea of national red-and-green flags fluttering back and forth. Star player Cristiano Ronaldo, nursing the injured knee which curtailed his part in Sunday's final, took the microphone to thank the fans for their support during the tournament. "We deserve to make history in Portugal, we are the first to win an important competition for our country, but you deserve it for supporting us from beginning to end. Thanks everyone," he said before letting out his classic yell. Eder, who scored the winning goal, and the other members of the team took half an hour to wave to the fans, and sign autographs before returning to the bus and finishing their city tour. Flags were waved, they danced with the trophy and dumped beer over each other.
