ROUGH CUT - NATURAL (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan openly wept on Sunday (July 17) at the funeral for his top campaign manager and their teenage son, both of whom were slain during the failed coup attempt in that country. Erol Olcak and his son, Abdullah Tayyip Olcak, 16, were killed when rebel soldiers attempting to overthrow Erdogan's government opened fire on civilian protesters at Istanbul's Bosphorus bridge, according to media reports. Thousands attended their funeral ceremony, where Erdogan burst into tears as he addressed the crowds. More than 290 were killed in the clashes, according to the government, along with 1,400 injured. Some 104 of those killed were rebels. Turkey widened a crackdown on suspected supporters of the coup on Sunday, with an estimated 6,000 members of the armed forces and judiciary detained. Erdogan has warned there should be no delay in using the death penalty against rebels. With expectations growing of heavy measures against dissent, European leaders have warned Erdogan that the coup attempt did not give him leave to disregard the rule of law and that he risked international isolation as he strengthened his position at home.
