Top IOC official arrested in ticket scam

Irish IOC official Patrick Hickey was reportedly rushed to a hospital after Brazilian police arrested him in connection with illegal sales of Olympic tickets. Diane Hodges reports.

Brazilian police came to this hotel to arrest Patrick Hickey as part of their investigation into the illegal sales of Olympic tickets. Police linked Hickey to a scheme to illegally pass Olympic tickets to touts, who were reselling them at inflated prices, according to police spokesman Ronaldo Oliveira. SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL POLICE, RONALDO OLIVEIRA, SAYING: "We confiscated his passport, that was our main objective, and his laptops, following the judicial orders that we obtained." After he was arrested, local media say Hickey was rushed to this hospital. Hickey, who is Irish, is a board member of the International Olympic Committee, and the president of the European Olympic Committee. IOC Communications Director Mark Adams had little comment on the situation. (SOUNDBITE) (English) IOC DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, MARK ADAMS, SAYING: "The police have been here, I can confirm that, and Patrick Hickey has gone to hospital. Patrick Hickey is in hospital and when we know some facts, when the police give us some facts, then we will look into them. I understand the Irish National Olympic Committee has launched a ticket investigation some time ago." Hickey was a member of the IOC's coordination commission for the Rio Games, the body in charge of overseeing preparations for the first Olympics held in South America. His arrest follows the detention of a director and translator of international sports hospitality company T-H-G Sports. Officials say they may have made as much as $3 million dollars from buying tickets and reselling them at a higher price. T-H-G has rejected the accusations, saying their tickets were acquired legally from an authorized reseller.
