Sanbot enters humanoid robot market

Chinese firm Qihan launches Sanbot at this week's Berlin IFA exhibition, as it seeks to crack the increasingly competitive personal robot market. Jim Drury reports

Sanbot is Chinese firm Qihan's new humanoid robot. Launched at this week's IFA consumer trade show, it has front and rear cameras, a microphone, display screen, and 360 degree rotating wheels. It can speak, offer advice, and even dance. Sanbot can be used in conjunction with Qihan's private cloud system Q-Link, while its application programming interface is open to all. SOUNDBITE (English) SOFIA LUO, QIHAN OVERSEAS MARKETING DIRECTOR, SAYING: "We have open API for developers. We would like to invite developers to join us to offer more services in retail, education, hotel, security and industry, for the future." The firm thinks Sanbot could act as an auxiliary carer, teacher, or even a mobile marketing device for companies. It's already being used in China. SOUNDBITE (English) SOFIA LUO, QIHAN OVERSEAS MARKETING DIRECTOR, SAYING: "We already have an appliance in Shenzhen international airport. In the airport it can offer the flight information for the tourist and also can guide them to the way they want to go in the airport." Sanbot goes on sale in Europe in October and in the US next year. Qihan hopes Sanbot can help it gain a foothold in the increasingly crowded humanoid robot market.
