ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Democrat Hillary Clinton attacked her Republican rival Donald Trump for reviving the "birther" controversy when he refused in a newspaper interview to say whether he believed President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Addressing an audience of African-American women at the Black Women's Agenda gathering in Washington D.C., Clinton said Trump owes Obama and the American people an apology. "He is feeding into the worst impulses, the bigotry and bias that lurks in our country," she said. Trump's campaign later said that the Republican presidential nominee does in fact believe Obama was born in the U.S., and Trump plans to address Obama's citizenship later on Friday. "Donald Trump looks at President Obama after eight years as our president - he still doesn't see him as an American. Imagine how dangerous that is," Clinton said. "Donald Trump is unfit to be President of the United States." Trump several years ago led the so-called birther movement which questions whether Obama, who was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a Kenyan father, was actually born in the United States. Trump has recovered ground against Clinton in recent national opinion polls after revamping his campaign staff in August and taking steps to give a more polished performance on the campaign trail. But the birther movement, which casts doubt over whether Obama is legally able to be president, incenses black Americans whose votes Trump has been trying to court.
