ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) The North American Wife Carrying Competition crowned a new champion team on Saturday (October 8). Elliot and Giana Storey from Maine competed against 43 couples to win the 17th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship held in the town of Sunday River in their home state. "Towards the end you get tired holding on, cause of the way I hold on I guess but yeah i just want to see, I want to see what is happening, I can hear or feel how fast he is which, I felt that today. It was great, I could feel he was going super fast," said one half of the winning couple Giana Storey. Every year, up to 50 couples compete in the competition along a 278-obstacle course up the grassy slopes of Sunday River for cash prizes and beer. The winning couple was happy to claim their first North American title with a time of 59.18 seconds and took home 11 cases of Goose Island Octoberfest beer and five times Giana's weight in cash that totaled $665. The Storeys join a long and illustrious line of champion wife carriers dating back to 19th Century Finland's "Ronkainen the Robber," who required male recruits to his posse to prove their strength by stealing sacks and sometimes women from neighboring villages. As the new North American Wife Carrying Champions, Elliot and Giana qualify to compete in the World Championship in Sonkajärvi, Finland, next summer.
