A glimmer of hope … in an otherwise desperate scene. A young child reportedly pulled alive from under the concrete rubble of a bombed-out building in rebel-held eastern Aleppo. The so-called 'White Helmet' rescue workers rush the save the infant …even as the sound of explosions echoes in the background. Nearby, an injured man is carried away by rescue workers as bomb blasts continue. These are the darkest days for the opposition in Aleppo. Government forces are mounting their most concerted effort yet to capture the rebel-held east. The fierce bombardments have killed hundreds of people since just September. And some 270,000 people are thought to be living in dire conditions in besieged areas of the city. If Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can crush the rebellion in Aleppo, it would be his biggest victory to date.
