Brutal cold grips U.S.

A wave of arctic air is blasting through much of the U.S., wreaking havoc on the roads and airports ahead of the Christmas holiday. Linda So reports.

The bitter cold breaking records in the Midwest and Plains. SOUNDBITE: ERIN HARRIS, MINNESOTA RESIDENT, SAYING: "It feels like I'm in the Antarctic." Brutally cold temperatures are gripping much of the U.S.. Heavy snow and ice grounded flights ahead of the busy Christmas travel week and caused hundreds of pileups on the road. In Portland, Oregon, the dangerous arctic air forced vulnerable families into shelters. For Sunday sports fans, the bitter cold was brutal but not keep to keep people home. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED MINNESOTA RESIDENT, SAYING: "I grew up playing hockey outside. This is nothing new. I would spend eight hours a day out in this. But, it's cold that's for sure." Tailgaters as far south as Houston had to get creative to stay warm. SOUNDBITE: PATRICIA SPIVEY, TEXANS FAN, SAYING: "I'm not going to tell you how many socks, I put the number of socks I could fit in my shoes." A break in the weather is expected by mid-week, but until then, forecasters say temperatures will stay far below normal from the Great Lakes to Texas.
