UPSOUND: KERRY Despite our best efforts, the two state solution is in serious jeopardy. Less than a month before leaving office, Secretary of State John Kerry issuing a dire warning to Israel over the waning chances at peace with Palestine-a bare-knuckled response to criticism over the U-S's decision not to veto a U-N resolution criticizing Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. SOUNDBITE: KERRY They have a choice: they can choose to live together in one state, or they can separate into two states. [white flash] If the choice is one state, Israel can either be jewish or democratic, it cannot be both, and it won't ever really be at peace. While Kerry also criticized the Palestinian side-calling out Hamas for inciting violence, meaning citizens of the gaza strip will continue to suffer-most of his criticism was directed at the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long had an acrimonious relationship with President Obama that only got worse after the landmark Iran nuclear deal. Kerry defending the Obama Administration's support of Israel-citing the support for the Iron Dome missile defense system and historic levels of military aid-and saying friendship does not mean the US must accept any Israeli policy without question. SOUNDBITE: KERRY Friends need to tell each other the hard truths. Kerry also strongly pushing back on charges the United States played any role in drafting or promoting the UN resolution… saying Egypt introduced it, and the U-S could not in good conscience veto it. Incoming President-elect Donald Trump poised to take a much different position with Israel once he takes office next month-already nominating a pro-settlement Israeli ambassador and tweeting hours before Kerry's speech "Stay strong Israel, January 20th is fast approaching."
