A jury in Charleston, South Carolina, has condemned convicted church shooter Dylann Roof to death. The 22-year-old white supremacist was found guilty last month of 33 federal charges for shooting nine black parishioners at a Bible study in 2015. The massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston shocked the city and the nation. Roof had represented himself during the trial and did not ask the jury to spare his life. During his closing argument, he told the jury he felt like he had to do it. Roof still faces a trial on murder charges in state court, where prosecutors also are seeking the death penalty.
