The nominees for the Directors Guild of America awards have been announced, and this year's front-running film, "La La Land" received a nomination for its director Damien Chazelle. Chazelle earned a nod for the top prize - outstanding directorial achievement in feature film. He'll compete with Barry Jenkins the man behind the intimate, coming-of-age drama "Moonlight;" Garth Davis, the director of the biographical drama "Lion;" Kenneth Lonergan for his drama "Manchester by the Sea;" and Denis Villeneuve for his alien film "Arrival." A surprise among this year's nominees was Nate Parker, who earned a nod in the outstanding directorial achievement for a first-time feature film category for "Birth of a Nation." The movie, about a 19th century slave rebellion, is written, directed, produced and stars Parker, and was seen as a strong Oscar contender until reports of a 1999 lawsuit surfaced. The lawsuit involved a rape charge against Parker, however he was acquitted in the case.
