Just as China seemed to be taking a cautious approach to Donald Trump, the tune is changing. Beijing threatening to quote 'take off the gloves' in state media on Monday (January 16) if the incoming U.S. president continues to rub salt in the wounds over Taiwan. Last week, Trump told the Wall Street Journal that the One China policy was up for negotiation - that's the agreement that officially recognises Taiwan as a renegade Chinese province and Beijing isn't happy about it. In the eyes of the Communist Party, the One China Policy is the basis of political ties with Washington. The influential Global Times on Monday saying Beijing would mercilessly combat anyone who backs the idea of Taiwanese independence. It all comes against the backdrop of a second U.S. stopover by Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen at the weekend. She passed through San Francisco on her way back home from Latin America - a week after meeting senior republicans during a controversial stop-off in Houston - a trip that Beijing did its best to block from the get-go.
