Four more rescued from Italian avalanche hotel, death toll up to five

Five people have been confirmed dead after an avalanche demolished a hotel in central Italy on Wednesday (January 18), and nine survivors have been pulled from the wreckage, the national fire service said on Saturday (January 21). Scarlett Cvitanovich reports.

Two days after a devastating avalanche, four more people pulled alive from the wreckage of this mountainside hotel in central Italy. Nine survivors have been rescued since Wednesday's (January 18) tragedy. Four - two men and two women - were found alive overnight Friday (January 20). Firefighters digging for hours to reach them, moving cautiously for fear buried air pockets might collapse. Four children and a woman were saved earlier on Friday, dug out from under tonnes of snow and debris. The death toll has now risen to five. Three bodies recovered in the early hours of Saturday (January 21) morning. There were around 30 people inside when a tsunami of snow smashed into the hotel on Wednesday. Around 15 are still unaccounted for. The weather not making the rescue teams job any easier Relatives waiting outside a local hospital for any news of their loved ones. This man, whose son is still missing, complaining the authorities were too slow to act. The disaster came hours after a series of tremors hit the region, including a 5.7 magnitude quake. The crush of snow initially hampered rescue efforts. Paths to the scene had to be cut through drifts. Some responders had to arrive by helicopter. The rescuers' base camp in a town some 10 km (6 miles) away. It took 11 hours for the first teams to arrive. Now they are there - rescue teams plan to work night and day until everyone is accounted for.
