U.S. President Donald Trump urged the chief executives of General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler to increase production in the United States and boost American employment. He opened the meeting with GM CEO Mary Barra, Ford CEO Mark Fields, and Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne at the White House by saying he wants to see new auto plants built in the United States. Kelley Blue Book's Rebecca Lindland says President Trump, as a businessman, should think about what is the art of this best deal. (SOUNDBITE) REBECCA LINDLAND, SENIOR DIRECTOR, KELLEY BLUE BOOK, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "These plants are not something you can necessarily turn around on a dime. We do have flexible manufacturing, but it's not so easy to just expand plant overnight, or to add those jobs. You have to look at what is the plant build, what is the supplier base around that plant, what is the supporting infrastructure of that plant, so short, immediate request can be really disruptive, longer-term request can then be angled to facilitate growth, facilitate increases in employment and production." The auto executives raised the issue of fuel efficiency rules, trade policy, and other regulatory issues, a person briefed on the meeting said. Fiat Chrysler's CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters after the meeting that Trump did not give them specifics on what regulations he would cut. In the past, President Trump threatened to impose 35 percent tariffs on imported vehicles. He also vowed to cut regulations and taxes to make it more attractive for businesses to operate in the United States.
