AERIAL VIEW OF THE BONZAI PIPELINE BREAK STORY: The North Shore was rocking on Saturday (February 4) as perhaps the best swell of the season hit the Bonzai Pipeline. The famed surf break offered up 15-foot (4.6 meters) waves on the third day of the Volcom Pipe Pro, which featured some of sport's biggest names in action, including Kelly Slater and defending World Champion John John Florence. One of the best Pipe Masters in the business, Bruce Irons (HAW), scored the highest single wave score of the day -- a 9.67 on his opening ride in his third round heat. Meanwhile, 11x World Champion Slater found a nice ride and seemed to get into rhythm with a 7.23, but it was a 19-year old local boy, Seth Moniz of Honolulu, who came out on top of the veterans to move into the fourth round. The Volcom Pipe Pro is a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 event that features the best surfers in the world along with household Pipe names and up-and-comers from Hawaii. The window for the tournament runs through February 10th. The WSL Championship Tour starts back up next month in Australia.
