The jury of the 67th Berlin Film Festival struck a political note at their first press conference today as the Berlinale got underway in the German capital. Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who is President of this year's jury, said he was hoping for movies that were "different" and "controversial". (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, PAUL VERHOEVEN, SAYING: "I hope that we'll see a lot of movies that are different, that are hopefully controversial, where we as a jury would really have heated arguments, but fully, in full respect of each other, so I hope that there will be diversity and that there will be, perhaps anger, and, and, and best thing will be a general enthusiasm." He is joined in judging duties this year by American actor Maggie Gyllenhaal and Mexican star Diego Luna. They both used the platform to refer to the tense political climate affecting their respective homes. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL, SAYING: "I feel like it's an amazing time to be an American in an international festival. I feel like I want everyone to know that there are many, many people in my country who are ready to resist and I feel honoured to be here and able to say that." The festival comes amid tight security following the truck attack that killed 12 people and injured 48 others at a Christmas market in December. As part of this year's security measures, concrete bollards have been placed in front of festival venues The opening film is "Django", a biopic about legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The film is one of 18 films competing for the Golden and the Silver Bears.
