Nice removed on Thursday (February 9) makeshift memorials in homage to the victims of the July 14 truck attack as the city prepares for its annual carnival, the biggest event in the coastal Mediterranean town since the deadly Islamist attack. Volunteers collected flowers, drawings and toys left by passers-by in memory of the 86 victims killed when attacker Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed a truck into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks on the Promenade des Anglais. With the permission of the victims' families, objects will be moved to an archives room to be stored and some will be digitised, preserving them as a record of history. But for some, the removal of the outpouring of grief was painful to watch. "No, I can't understand, I can't understand why the town isn't building a Plexiglas dome to protect this space. It's our space, it belongs to the people of Nice; it's our suffering," one woman who did not disclose her name told Reuters. Marion Duvigneau, in charge of the Nice archives, said: "We're going to partly digitise the objects, poems and photos with perhaps the idea in mind of creating a website, perhaps dedicating a publication as was done in Paris to pay homage to the November attacks victims; everything is possible. From the moment the memorial item is collected, classed and conserved, and then afterwards - whether it's in three years, in ten years, in 300 years - the objects will still be there." Nice cleared the memorials before the King's Carnival begins on Saturday (February 11), where security will remain a top concern as the city is transformed into a festive landscape.
