ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: After pain and reflection, designer Brandon Maxwell turns out a collection he said came straight from his heart, at New York Fashion Week: The Shows on Tuesday (February 14). "You know this one I think - I went through a period of my life, like I said, I had to face myself and what I stood for. I think I never expected for any of this to happen, honestly," said Maxwell. "I think a lot of the things that happened scared me and I think I didn't want to let people down and this time around I just kind of wanted to, as the song said in the show, break free. Just kind of do what I wanted to do. And I knew going in that it wouldn't be for everyone but I'm cool with it," he added. Although Maxwell stayed true to his design aesthetic with layers and mainly a black and white color palette, he said newfound joy brought out additional hues. "Honestly if I show four colored dresses that's like - that's a lot of color for me. So yeah, it was. I felt really colorful at this time of my life. A lot of love came into my life, I made peace with a lot of things in my life and I felt good." Strong shoulders were used on dresses and jackets. Cut outs and crop top gave the collection its edge. The Texas born designer said during this difficult time he sought comfort in creation. "When you're going through a hard time people are like, 'who's your therapist?' I'm like, my studio, that's where I go," Maxwell said. "I feel so blessed for the joy that it gives me and the happiness that it gives to me. I don't do drugs, I don't party. And what gets me high is making clothes. And so, I wanted to return to that this season." Since his launch in 2015, celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell and former U.S. first lady, Michelle Obama, have worn his designs. "I feel so blessed for all the fantastic things that have happened. And also more than all the great things that have happened I feel so blessed for the joy that it gives me and the happiness that it gives to me." Maxwell made a name for himself as pop star Lady Gaga's stylist. New York Fashion Week will end on February 16.
