ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday (February 18) that her government would do "everything possible" to meet a NATO target for spending 2 percent of economic output on defence by 2024. She said Europe's ties with Russia remained challenging, but it was important to work with Russia in the fight against Islamist terrorism. "It means continuing to pay attention to NATO, Russia, not giving up, also when times are hard, and I thank the NATO Secretary-General who continues to pursue meetings with Russia, and looking for common ground in the fight against Islamic terrorism. I believe we have exactly the same interests and here we can work together," Merkel said in a speech at the annual conference, with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence amongst the audience. Merkel, who has been critical of a U.S. ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, underscored that Islam itself was not the source of terrorism. She said it was critical to include Muslim countries in the fight against Islamist terrorism.
