NO REPORTER NARRATION. Russia wants to build pragmatic relations with the United States based on mutual respect, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday (February 18) at the Munich Security Conference. "We want pragmatic relations, mutual respect, understanding of the increased responsibility for global stability," Lavrov said, addressing the conference audience. "The constructive progress of Russia-U.S. relations lies within our mutual interest, moreover since America is as close of a neighbour for us as the European Union. We are separated by only four kilometres on the Bering Strait," he added. Lavrov also urged the government in Kiev and rebels in eastern Ukraine to return to the table. "There is no alternative to the fulfillment of the Minsk complex of measures through direct dialogue between Kiev and Donetsk and Luhansk. This is a firm position of Russia, the West and the U.N. Security Council. It is important for the Kiev authorities to also get on the track of fulfillment of its obligations," he said. Other speakers at Munich-based conference include Angela Merkel and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
