Kansas shooting victim cremated, FBI launches hate crime probe

In his speech to Congress Tuesday night, President Trump condemned recent anti-Semitic attacks in the US, and last week's killing of an Indian man in Kansas. That killing is now being investigated as a hate crime, stoking fears back in India of a rise in anti-immigrant violence in the US. Colette Luke reports.

Family and friends in Hyderabad Tuesday mourning the death of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, the Indian man who was shot in a Kansas bar last week… His father shedding tears at the cremation ceremony - held according to Hindu ritual. And his brother ........ still angry. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BROTHER OF KANSAS SHOOTING VICTIM SRINIVAS KUCHIBHOTLA, V. MADHAV, SAYING: "We are (have) also requested the government to ensure that this kind of incident should not happen to any family." ...and back in Kansas.. the FBI saying they will investigate the shooting as a hate crime.... Last Wednesday, Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani - both engineers at the U.S. navigational device company Garmin - were shot at Austins bar and Grille in Olathe, Kansas... U.S. Navy veteran - Adam Purinton - has been charged in the shootings.. In a 911 Call made by a bartender at Applebee's hours after the shooting, the caller says Purinton said he needed to hide: Kuchibhotla's death has reportedly made Indians more fearful of seeing loved ones travel and work in the U.S. as some feel hate crime in the US is on the rise.
