EARLIER CRASH WHICH DROPPED NICLAS SVENSSON DOWN TO 13TH IN THE POINTS STORY: Russia's Dmitry Koltakov was the winner of the first day's ice speedway racing in Berlin on Saturday (March 4), winning the final race of the day for 21 points. Igor Kononov finished second, three points on the day behind Koltakov having dropped points to both Koltakov and Dina Valeev in consecutive heats then just ahead of Dinar Valeev and Franz Zorn in the final. Current champion Dmitry Khomitsevich failed to qualify having been disqualified after knocking over a straw bale in Heat 18 and then finishing behind Kononov and Valeev in his semi final ride. Challenges from German and Swedish riders failed with only Hans Weber of Germany making the cut, Sweden's Stefan Svensson was the only Swede reaching the top 10. Over Ledstrom fell in his first race and Niclas Svensson had a spectacular crash while leading to score only two points. Top five finishers on Saturday (March 4) 1. Dmitry Koltakov (Russ) 21 2.
