Women and men took to the streets across the United States on International Women's Day to protest the gender pay gap and the deregulation of reproductive rights. (SOUNDBITE) UNNAMED EVENT ORGANIZER TO CROWD (ENGLISH) SAYING: "So, I want you to understand that your statement that you are making today, is part of a long history of women who have led us in social justice movements. WHat makes it different now. Now we have an open sexist, misogynist, anti-women president." Many women took the day off from work just as immigrants did last month to protest President Donald Trump's immigration policies. That led protesters to renaming International Women's Day as "A Day Without a Woman." Allison Rosenwinkel participated in New York City. (SOUNDBITE) ALLISON ROSENWINKEL, PROTESTER, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "I think it's important that we stand up, even if it might be difficult to do at times. I'm here because I want my children and the future to be able to have human rights for everyone." Not many teachers showed up to work at this school in Alexandria, Virginia just outside Washington D.C. Helen Lloyd works for the city's public school system. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HELEN LLOYD, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAYING: "For us this is unprecedented. We've never had a case like this where we've had so many teachers call out altogether in one day." The marches were part of a wave of anti-Trump demonstrations that have taken place since his election to the White House. Early Wednesday morning, Trump urged others to join him in honoring the critical role women have played in America and around the world. He tweeted: "I have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy."
