Two kid-friendly movie theaters open in California

Mexican movie theater chain Cinepolis opens a new child-friendly auditorium with climbing frames, slides and beanbag chairs in the United States. Fred Katayama reports.

Jungle gyms, slides, and bean bag chairs come with a purchase of a ticket to this movie theater in Los Angeles. (SOUNDBITE) MARCUS VILLAREAL, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "It's awesome." Alna Arroyo is here with her daughter. (SOUNDBITE) ALNA ARROYO, MOTHER OF MIKAELA ARROYO, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "They're running up and down the stairs and on these things and so, when it comes time for the movie, they'll be able to sit down because they're tired, so that's good." It's one of two kid-friendly movie theaters in the United States opened by Mexican multiplex operator Cinepolis. (pronounced: sin-OH-pul-us) The other is in San Diego. Both are designed to get families back in front of the big screen. April Mendoza, vice president of sales and marketing at Cinepolis. (SOUNDBITE) APRIL MENDOZA, VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETING AT CINEPOLIS, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Our ideal goal is to start the kids little, and so they understand what the movie-going experience is and they carry that with them through their adult life and continue to watch movies all the way through." Children can play for twenty minutes before the start of the movie and must be back in their seats by the time the feature begins. Cinepolis introduced the concept in Mexico in January 2014. It expanded to theaters in Spain, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, making a total of 32 worldwide.
