(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Thank you very much. We were very close." It was a painful admission... President Donald Trump's first major legislative initiative ending in failure... with the House of Representatives chair postponing the vote to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system and House Speaker Paul Ryan pulling the American Health Care Act off the table. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAUL RYAN, HOUSE SPEAKER, SAYING: "I will not sugarcoat this. This is a disappointing day for us. Doing big things is hard." The GOP leader says the votes simply weren't there. The White House and party leaders failed to find common ground with both moderates and conservatives. Without the bill's passage in Congress, the Affordable Care Act - also known as Obamacare - lives to see another day. Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature domestic policy achievement remains in place. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was elated. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NANCY PELOSI, HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADER, SAYING: "Today a victory for the Affordable Care Act, more importantly for the American people." Trump had promised in last year's presidential election to repeal and replace Obamacare... a promise now likely to remain unfulfilled for the foreseeable future.
