Samsung unveils its Galaxy S8 smartphone

Samsung Electronics launched its Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone in hopes of regaining its market leadership that it lost to Apple after its embarrassing withdrawal of fire-prone Note 7. Fred Katayama reports.

Samsung unveiled its new flagship smartphone Galaxy S8. It comes in two versions. One has a 6.2-inch curved screen. The other is a little smaller, at 5.8-inches. These are the largest to date of Samsung's premium smartphones. They both feature a new artificial intelligence service, called Bixby, with functions including a voice-commanded assistant, similar to Apple's Siri. There's also a new facial recognition application that lets users unlock their phones by looking at them. With Galaxy S8, Samsung hopes to regain the market leadership it lost to Apple after the embarrassing withdrawal of the fire-prone previous phone - Galaxy Note 7. U.S. carriers T-Mobile and Verizon announced retail pricing for the smaller S8 around $700. The larger phone will sell for $840 at Verizon and $850 at T-Mobile.
