Kidman in Cannes spotlight as lineup unveiled

Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux unveils the official selection of 18 films for the 70th edition of the event, which opens on May 17. Francis Maguire reports.

And the winner is...well potentially Nicole Kidman. The Cannes Film Festival lineup has been announced and the Australian Oscar winner will feature in four productions. Some 18 films are set to grace the big screen for the 70th edition of the two-week festival The lineup being unveiled by festival director Thierry Fremaux. (SOUNDBITE) (French) CANNES FILM FESTIVAL DIRECTOR, THIERRY FREMAUX, SAYING: "Cannes festival, which will be opened Wednesday May 17th with the film by Arnaud Desplechin 'Ismael's Ghosts,' which will also be out in cinemas on that day." Nicole Kidman one of the big names bringing Hollywood glamour to the event. Her film 'The Beguiled' is entered as a a competition contender. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the American Civil War-era story casts Kidman alongside Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell. But small screen giants are hoping to scoop the biggest prize Netflix are entering the Palme d'Or race with 'Okja', starring Tilda Swinton Directed by Bong Joon Ho it's billed as the tale of a young girl taking on a multinational to save her best friend - a wild animal. And politics will get air time at this year's festival too 'An Inconvienient Sequel: Truth to Power' being screened. It's a follow up to Al Gore's 2006 documentary 'An Inconvienient Truth'. And that's unlikely to be the only political story casting a shadow over Cannes. The festival will open just days after the final round of voting in France's presidential election.
