Donald Trump campaigned vociferously against the nuclear deal as a candidate for president, promising to tear it up. (SOUNDBITE)(ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP ON SEPT 9. 2015, SAYING: 'I tell you. That deal will be totally renegotiated, or worse. Or worse.' The nuclear deal requires the U.S. State Department notify Congress every 90 days on Iran's compliance. On Tuesday, Tillerson sent a letter to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the first notification under the Trump administration. The deal reached in 2015 lifted international sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran accepting limits on its civilian nuclear power progam. President Barack Obama touted the deal as victory for those who wanted to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. But U.S. Republicans roundly rejected the aggrement, and perhaps none more so than Trump. (SOUNDBITE)(ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP ON SEPT 5. 2016, SAYING: 'Obama is a terrible negotiator. You look at the deal he made with Iran. It's one of the worst deals in the history of dealmaking, okay?' Tillerson also said that he was launching an inter-agency review of whether the deal was in the U.S.'s national security interests. He did not say how long the review might take.
