ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION This year's Cannes Palme d'Or award will sparkle with 167 diamonds, in celebration of the prestigious film festival's 70th edition and 20 years of parnership with Swiss jeweler Chopard. It is the first time the award will be set with diamonds. Designed in 1998 by Caroline Scheufele, co-president of Chopard, the trophy is made with 118 grams of pure gold and needs 40 hours of work and the intervention of seven jewelers. The 0,694 carat award is estimated to be worth more than 20,000 euros. La Palme d'Or celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2015, but it has only been awarded 56 times since its first edition. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar will chair the jury at the festival that runs from May 17 to May 28 while the actress Monica Bellucci will conduct the ceremony.
