SHOWS: MADRID, SPAIN (MAY 7, 2017) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL) 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARIA SHARAPOVA, TALKING ABOUT PLAYING EUGENIE BOUCHARD ON MONDAY WHO RECENTLY MADE COMMENTS ABOUT SHARAPOVA VEING ALLOWED TO RETURN TO TENNIS, SAYING: "It's not they way I go about my job (if she will have extra motivation against Bouchard) and I never really have. I have been on the public eyes since I was a very young girl and I have heard a lot of things. If everything affects you on and off the court I think that would be a really challenging position to be in and it's not the way I think. My tennis speaks for itself and that's what I'm focused on." STORY: Maria Sharapova set up an intriguing second-round clash with outspoken critic Eugenie Bouchard in the Madrid Open by seeing off Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 4-6 6-4 6-0 on Sunday (May 7). Sharapova will meet Bouchard, ranked 60, on Monday (May 8) in an eagerly anticipated game due to the Canadian's fierce criticism of the WTA's decision to allow the Russian to return to competitive tennis. Bouchard, 23, labelled Sharapova a "cheater" in an interview with Istanbul-based TRT World in April and said the WTA was setting a bad example to youngsters in letting her back into the sport. After her win against Lucic-Baroni, the 30-year-old Russian would not respond directly to Bouchard's words, but when asked if playing Bouchard would give her extra motivation, said: "It's not they way I go about my job and I never really have. I have been on the public eyes since I was a very young girl and I have heard a lot of things. If everything affects you on and off the court I think that would be a really challenging position to be in and it's not the way I think. My tennis speaks for itself and that's what I'm focused on."
