Spain, UK come under 'ransomware' cyber attack

Spain's government warned on Friday that a large number of companies had been attacked by cyber criminals who infected computers with malicious software known as “ransomware”, while Britain's health service also came under attack. Silvia Antonioli reports.

Spain under cyber attack The country has warned that a large number of companies have been victims of cybercriminals Telefonica, the country's largest telecoms firm is among those affected Their computers have been infected with a malicious software known as "ransomware" The bug locks up the machines and demands ransoms to restore access. A Telefonica spokesman said the IT problem had affected its internal network but not its clients. Power company Iberdrola and utility Gas Natural said they were taking preventive steps Spain is the latest country to warn about the global surge in ransomware But Britain has been victim too Its National Health Service is fending off an attack on hospitals across the country which is forcing them to cancel appointment and divert emergency patients. Hackers have created chaos in the US and Europe with attacks on public transport, police departments and hospitals
