"This health care plan, involves no hearings no bill text and no transparency at all," said Senator Kamala Harris. A wall of protest on the senate floor Monday (June 19) night. U.S. Democrats stepped up with a flurry of motions, inquiries, and speeches and hit out at Republican plans to get rid of Obamacare. "It's being discussed in secret with no committee hearings no debate, no amendments, no input from the minority," said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Shumer. "This is the most glaring departure from normal legislative procedure that I have ever seen." Republicans have been holding secret meetings on repealing the Affordable Care Act, with an unknown 13 members of the GOP working on their own alternative. Senate Democrats want open committee hearings and more time to consider a bill before its put to vote, something Republicans say could happen in the next two weeks. But the Democrats don't actually have the votes to derail or change what the Republicans are doing. Their efforts on the floor, more aimed at highlighting controversy. "How do you talk about a so-called health care bill when you are throwing 23 million people off of health insurance," said Senator Bernie Sanders. "They are drafting a bill without any input from women, from Democrats, from experts and by working in secret they're cutting out about 250 million people who are from the 40 states who aren't represented among those 13 men," said Senator Brian Schatz. Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused calls to move the healthcare legislation to committee. GOP senators want a vote on the bill before the July 4th recess, but with party moderates and conservatives pulling it in opposite directions, there's no guarantee that will happen.
