Riot control turned deadly in Venezuela on Thursday (June 23) One person confirmed dead after protesters attacked the outside of an airbase in Caracas, taking the toll to 76 people killed by use of force in anti-govertnment demonstrations that have gone on for months. According to an opposition lawmaker, a 22-year-old was killed by rubber bullets at point-blank range. Reuters pictures showed at least one soldier aimed a shotgun through the fence. A man is also seen collapsing before he was carried off by other protesters, though it's not clear if he's the one who died. The crowd attacked the airbase after burning a truck and motorbike when security forces broke up a march towards the attorney general's office. Witnesses say at least two others were taken to a hospital. "They can hurt us. They can injure us. But they will never hurt our convictions, our dreams, our principles and our desire to change Venezuela. Venezuela deserves more than Nicolas Maduro," said opposition deputy Jose Manuel Olivares. Hundreds of thousands of protesters have been swarmed Venezuela's streets, rallying against a crackdown on the opposition, as well as food and medicine shortages, and President Nicolas Maduro's plan to rewrite the constitution. Maduro claims the violence is part of a foreign plot to overthrow his government.
