Bollywood super stars descend on Times Square

Bollywood's leading men and women came to New York for the International Indian Film Academy Awards, also known as Bollywood Oscars, a big celebration of the $3 billion Indian film industry. Nisha Patel reports.

Beljinber Jubge took his entire family on a trip to New York from Canada for the International Indian Film Academy Awards, also known as the Bollywood Oscars. He watched Bollywood super stars, such as Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Nehia Dhupia, descending to Times Square on Thursday night. (SOUNDBITE) BELJINBER JUBGE, CANADIAN RESIDENT VISITING NEW YORK FOR THE IIFA (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Oh, we love these stars, and we watch their movies, Indian movies, and that's why we're here." In the past 17 years, the ceremony took place in many cities around the world, including London, Johannesburg, and Dubai. But this weekend, it's happening at the Met Life stadium in New Jersey. IIFA is a grand celebration of Indian movie industry, which has been the largest movie producer in the world, according to data from a research firm Statista. It releases more than a thousand films a year. In 2015, it sold more than 2.2 billion movie tickets in India. Its estimated worth is close to $3 billion. New Yorker Akankasha Raina came to the event in Times Square with her husband and a colleague. (SOUNDBITE) AKANKASHA RAINA, NEW YORK RESIDENT (ENGLISH) SAYING: "It's fun. There is a lot of music. There is a lot of dancing. It's huge. It's culture associated. We're nostalgic most of the times, so that's why we watch movies." The IIFA awards will be handed out on Sunday.
