Florida nursing home death toll rises to six

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, police said the death toll at a Florida nursing home that lost power after Hurricane Irma had risen to six. Linda So reports.

Police say six people died at a Florida nursing home after the facility lost power during Hurricane Irma. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation after three elderly residents were found dead at the Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills. Three others later died at the hospital. SOUNDBITE: POLICE CHIEF Tomas Sanchez, SAYING: 10:12:49 "We believe at this time it may be related to the loss of power in the storm but we're conducting a criminal investigation, not ruling anything out at this time." More than 100 patients were evacuated from the facility. Some were in critical condition and taken to area hospitals. The nursing home had been without air conditioning for days. SOUNDBITE: POLICE CHIEF Tomas Sanchez, SAYING: 12:49:16 "When we responded there this morning, we became aware of some of the conditions of the patients and immediately took action. Our investigation has revealed its extremely hot on the second floor of the facility." The Broward County mayor says some residents at the nursing home were evacuated several days ago after waking up feeling sick. Police are looking into why all residents weren't evacuated sooner.
