LEYS AND HOUVER CELEBRATING STORY: Two French pilots have beaten their international competitors to win a balloon race crown, navigating the furthest away from the starting point in Fribourg, Switzerland. The Gordon Bennett race, which calls itself the oldest gas balloon competition in the world, brings together experienced pilots from across the globe who each try to travel as far away as they can. The race involves travel across international borders and through the night. Vincent Leys and Christophe Houver piloted their way through Europe's skies to land smoothly 1,834.72 kilometres (1140 miles) away in a field near Vaiso in Estonia. The duo were the only one of the 21 gas balloons to travel through a thin corridor of airspace between Russia's Kaliningrad and Belarus. Many of their competitors landed some 500 kilometres (310 miles) behind them in Poland. In 2010, two race participants died after their balloon went missing over the Adriatic Sea.
