ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. Pope Francis said on Friday (October 6) that the Catholic Church must accept its responsibility "before God, victims and public opinion" for its sexual abuse scandals, but that it wants to share the lessons it learned. Francis spoke in an address to participants of a Church-organised conference, two months after a monsignor was recalled from the Holy See's Washington embassy after the U.S. State Department said he may have violated child pornography laws. The conference, called Child Dignity in the Digital World, brought together experts from digital companies, law enforcement, medicine and academia to discuss themes such as online bullying, pornography, and the targeting of children by pedophiles. Speaking before representatives of companies such as Facebook and Microsoft at a pontifical university in Rome, the pope called on internet companies to use "their great profits" to better defend children from sexual exploitation on the web.
