Brazil, China sign sanitary protocols for processed meat, cottonseed meal

SAO PAULO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Brazil and China signed on Friday two sanitary protocols for the trading of thermo-processed meat and cottonseed meal, according to a statement from Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry.

The protocols, which set hygiene and processing standards for the products, were signed by Brazilian Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina Dias and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC), the statement said.

Dias arrived in China last weekend and on Thursday joined a delegation led by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro aimed at strengthening political and trade relations between the two nations.

Thermo-processed meat is meat that has undergone thermal processes such as cooking. In 2018 Brazil exported $557 million in processed beef and China imported $25 million of the product, the Brazilian government said.

Cottonseed meal is used as animal feed. Brazilian exports of cottonseed meal remain very small, with China importing only $4 million of this product, the Brazilians said.

A memorandum of understanding was also announced involving Brazilian state-run agriculture research body Embrapa and the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the creation of joint laboratories for enhancement and development of soybeans.

The memorandum aims to foster cooperation in science and technology through joint projects in the fields of agriculture and natural resources, the statement said.

While describing general “advances” in trade talks during Brazil’s official visit, both countries still need to work out technical details related to the trade in soymeal, Dias said Thursday.

Last year, Brazil exported almost 69 million tonnes of soybeans to China and only 90,000 tonnes of soymeal, which has a higher aggregate value, according to government data. (Reporting by Ana Mano; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)
