UPDATE 1-Brazil July oil output up as natural gas production hits record

(Adds natural gas record, detail on pre-salt production)

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Brazilian natural gas production hit a record in July as oil production also rose compared to the same period last year, Brazilian oil regulator ANP said on Monday.

Natural gas production in the country rose 7.3 percent to 115 million cubic meters per day on average in July compared to the year-ago period, while oil output rose 1.5 percent to 2.623 million barrels per day compared to July 2016.

However, oil production in July represented a 1.9-percent fall compared to the prior month, due to a programmed halt in work on the P-58 platform for maintenance, ANP said.

Total oil and natural gas production in the month was about 3.346 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) on average.

Production in Brazil’s promising pre-salt offshore area fell 4.3 percent from the prior month to 1.613 million boe/d.

However, oil and gas production in the Santos basin, surpassed Campos Basin, historically Brazil’s biggest producer, for the first time in July, reaching an average of 1.522 million boe/d. Both are part of the pre-salt area. (Reporting by Alexandra Alper and Roberto Samora; Editing by Bill Trott and Nick Zieminski)
