***

Chumbawamba are unrepentant after they doused John Prescott with water at the 1998 show. Their statement said: “If John Prescott ... has the nerve to turn up at events such as the Brit Awards in a vain attempt to make Labour seem cool and trendy, then he deserves all we can throw at him.”

***

Prescott hits back with his own statement: “Mr Prescott thinks it is utterly contemptible that his wife and other womenfolk should have been subjected to such terrifying behaviour.”

***

Dance act KLF fire blank rounds from a machinegun before announcing to the stunned audience at the 1992 awards: “KLF have now left the music industry.”

***

Justin Hawkins wins the best band award with The Darkness in 2004: “We should thank our collective parents for bestowing on us the gift of rock.”

***

James Morrison comments on his sudden rise to fame at the 2007 ceremony: “Less than two years ago I was cleaning vans for a living, so it’s not worked out too badly has it?”

***

Fran Healy, lead singer of Travis, gets a bout of nerves at the 2000 ceremony: “They say that liquid paraffin is the best cure for constipation, but I think winning a Brit Award comes close.”
