Cricket-Brathwaite leads spirited West Indies reply

Aug 26 (Reuters) - Opener Kraigg Brathwaite led a spirited West Indies reply with an unbeaten half century on the second day of the second test against England at Headingley on Saturday.

Resuming on 19-1 after dismissing England for 258 on the opening day, West Indies reached lunch on 109-3 with the impressive Brathwaite on 63 having shared in a fourth-wicket partnership of 74 with Shai Hope.

James Anderson took both wickets to fall, removing nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo for one in the fifth over of the morning and then taking the wicket of Kyle Hope who was edged to second slip where captain Joe Root held a superb catch.

At 35 for three, and with Anderson using the muggy conditions to great effect, the visitors looked vulnerable but Brathwaite played watchfully and took every opportunity to score.

Brathwaite struck eight fours in his increasingly fluent innings while Shai Hope offered excellent support as he reached 33.

Brathwaite did have two let-offs when he successfully reviewed decisions after being given out. First an inside edge saved him an lbw decision against Stuart Broad and later he had another lbw ruling overturned after being struck by a turning delivery by Moeen Ali.

West Indies still trail by 149 runs.

England won the opening match of the series by a huge margin but West Indies have shown far greater appetite for the contest so far at Headingley and would have been in a better position were it not for a magnificent century by Ben Stokes on Friday.
