MADRID, March 19 (Reuters) - McLaren Formula One driver Carlos Sainz will take part in a celebrity virtual Grand Prix on Friday as esports looks to fill the void in the sporting calendar created by the coronavirus pandemic.
Spanish newspaper Marca on Thursday announced that they would stream a celebrity virtual Grand Prix in conjunction with the game Gran Turismo Sport.
Sainz, who revealed earlier this week that he tested negative for the virus, will take part as well as professional racers Lucas Ordonez and Albert Costa.
Marca says more participants will be revealed ahead of Friday’s event, which will be streamed live on its website as well as on its YouTube channel.
Soccer teams are also getting involved in esports with players from all 20 La Liga clubs across Spain taking part in a tournament this weekend. (Reporting by Joseph Cassinelli Editing by Toby Davis)
