US backs democratic Pakistan led by Zardari-Holbrooke

WASHINGTON, May 5 (Reuters) - The United States remains committed to supporting Pakistan and its democratically elected government led by President Asif Ali Zardari, a top U.S. official said on Tuesday.

"Our goal must be unambiguously to support and help stabilize a democratic Pakistan headed by its elected president, Asif Ali Zardari," Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, told Congress.

"We have the highest strategic interests in supporting this government," he said. (Writing by John Whitesides, Editing by Sandra Maler)
