TABLE-India's August fuel demand falls about 16% y-o-y

    Sept 9 (Reuters) - India's fuel demand fell about 16% in August compared with a year
earlier, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Oil Ministry
showed on Wednesday.
    Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totalled 14.39 million tonnes, the data
showed.
    Demand for diesel, which is widely used for transportation as well as for irrigation
needs in India, declined 20.8% year-on-year to 4.85 million tonnes.
    Sales of gasoline, or petrol, fell by 7.4% from a year earlier to 2.38 million tonnes.
    Cooking gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sales dropped by about 5% to 2.28 million
tonnes, while naphtha sales decreased by 24.6% to 1.07 million tonnes.
    Sales of bitumen, used for making roads, rose 39.1%, and fuel oil increased by 4.2%
last month.
