EU officials say Italy compliance with fiscal rules to be assessed against 2019 targets

BRUSSELS, Oct 3 (Reuters) - European Commission’s officials said on Wednesday the EU executive’s assessment of Italy’s compliance with fiscal rules will concern only targets for 2019 and not for future years.

The clarification comes after the Italian government said earlier on Wednesday it could cut its deficit targets from 2020 after plans announced last week caused market turmoil. (Reporting by Francesco Guarascio; editing by Philip Blenkinsop)
